Monarch Butterflies - Ted Talk

Most of you know I'm raising monarch butterflies in my living room this summer.
Right now I have 6 chrysalises and about 15 caterpillars.

Monarchs are amazing.  But monarchs are in trouble.  They have declined by 90%.

Causes are climate change and drought, deforestation in Mexico, disease, car strikes during the fall migration, lack of milkweed habitat.

Farming has taken away the milkweed fields.  The milkweed plant is the only plant that monarch caterpillars eat.  But milkweed is seen as a weed that farmer's spray for.  This Ted Talk talks about the genetically-modified Round-Up ready seeds that tolerate Round-Up herbicide so farmer's spay more often during the growing season.

(This is affecting bees too.)

The speaker here challenges us to buy organic foods, especially corn and soy products.  She asks us to avoid genetically-modified foods.

Also join the journey-north project.  https://www.learner.org/jnorth/monarch/ (I plan to do that).  And encourage milkweed plantings either in your yard, an empty field or roadside area.  She encourages planting just one milkweed plant in your yard.  Anyone can do that.  Now, speaking from experience, milkweed plants spread on their own (as many plants do), although they weren't taking over our yard by any means.  (like ground ivy did at our old house).

Monarchs may be considered an endangered species soon.  If you have a few minutes, watch this TedTalk and learn about monarchs.

Love Ted Talk.
There are just so many people that could care less about the plight of the Monarch and other environmental situations. We can only hope that we awaken one person, and they do the same. A blog friend in Ft. Wayne Indiana informed me about 10 years ago. Hopefully your posts have inspired your readers to help the Monarch.
xx, Carol
